Yousuf Karsh

Edward Steichen (1879–1973) Steichen exhibited and published photographs with Alfred Steiglitz, supervised U.S. military photography in both world wars, directed photography for Conde Nast in the 1930s, and headed the photography department of the Museum of Modern Art where he organized the landmark Family of Man exhibition in 1955. Karsh made this portrait of Steichen and his wife at their Connecticut home in the elder artist’s ninetieth year. Karsh remarked on Steichen’s premonition of death in the caption for this photograph in Karsh: A Fifty-Year Retrospective (1983).
