Man Ray (1890–1976) Man Ray was born Emmanuel Radinski in Philadelphia in 1890. Along with Marcel Duchamp, he tried to bring the Dada art movement to New York. Moving to Paris in 1921, he was committed to photography and filmmaking. In 1922 he published a series of his pioneering “rayographs,” camera-less images made by placing objects on photosensitive paper and exposing them to light. Man Ray participated in Dada and Surrealist art exhibitions throughout Europe until war broke out. He then returned to America and worked as a fashion photographer in Hollywood for ten years before settling permanently in Paris in 1950.
