Clark Gable (1901–1960) Gable made his screen debut in The Painted Desert (1931) and soon reached the pinnacle of his profession, receiving an Academy Award in 1934 for a brilliant comic performance in It Happened One Night. His most renowned role was as Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind (1939). Gable was known to Hollywood as “the King” and was considered a symbol of the rugged and raffish American male. The photographer framed the actor squarely, recording the good looks and confidant posture of a man totally comfortable in front of a camera.
