Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890–1969) Eisenhower became General of the Army in 1944. He was Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces in Western Europe during World War II and Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1945 to 1948. In 1951 he became the first Supreme Commander of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). He retired from the army in 1952 to run for President, won the election, and was re-elected in 1956. Karsh photographed Eisenhower the year after World War II ended and published the photo in his first book, Faces of Destiny, that same year.
