The turquoise blue ground color on this teacup and saucer is known as bleu celeste. This ground color was used at both the factory and at James Giles' studio; the lighter shade as seen on this piece is most commonly associated with James Giles. The row of diminishing gold dots on the cup handle also is a Giles trademark.
Worcester's bleu celeste ground was based on a Sèvres ground color which, in turn, was inspired by Chinese Kangxi porcelain. The turquoise ground also may have derived from Chelsea, where it was introduced around 1760. The color was introduced at Worcester in the late 1760s and was most often used as an unadorned solid ground with gilt borders. It occurs chiefly on teawares and dessert services of the 1770s and occasionally on vases, mugs and masked jugs.
