Mystic River was produced during the period when Reynolds Beal was concentrating on the landscape around Noank, Connecticut, an area he painted often between 1900 and 1907. The area around Noank also hosted an informal artist's colony. The subject, a seascape, is a characteristic one for Beal and the long, low horizon line in the painting is also common in his works from this period. The painting is done in Beal's impressionist style with its sketchy representations of objects, adjacent but unblended strokes of complementary colors, and interest in the effects of light on water and clouds.
