Rembrandt van Rijn
Dutch, 1606–1669
A drawing by Rembrandt in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, shows a view almost identical to this print. In fact, there is no other example of a landscape print by the artist matched so closely by a drawing, indicating that this print was probably composed in the studio. Rembrandt made a number of changes from the drawing to the print, altering the size of the trees and the garden behind the house that is screened by the paling fence, as well as the fence itself. He also added a haystack at the top of the cottage’s thatched roof, which was not in the drawing. See "Rembrandt: Beyond the Brush; Master Prints from the Weil Collection," exh. cat. (Montgomery: Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, 1999), 74.
