The Baptism of Christ is a work ascribed to the latest period of Schongauer's oeuvre. It is generally considered one of his most successful and sophisticated compositions, and may have been intended as one of a series of works depicting the life of Christ.
Images of the Baptism of Christ were commonly included in programs that depicted the life of Christ. Christ's baptism was typologically associated with the anointing by the prophets of the Israelite kings from the Old Testament, and with scenes of the Resurrection from the New Testament, thus establishing that Christ was both the chosen of God, as well as the means of human salvation.
