Mose Tolliver (aka MoseT)
American, (active about 1920–2006)
This is one of a group of paintings acquired by the Museum from an early collector of Mose Tolliver's work. It reflects the raw character of his earliest paintings, but one can see the roots of his typical subjects as well as his use of contour and color. While Tolliver eventually created more structured compositions with tightly controlled brushwork, his love of the viscous quality of the paint as used on an individual support, with its irregularities fully exploited, is exemplifed in this early piece.
