Tiffany Studios
American, born established 1902
The Tiffany glass furnaces and craftsmen in Corona, New York produced the finest, most sought after examples of American Art Nouveau glass in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This example displays the technique of adding luster to the surface of the vase by the use of salts of metallic oxides—these oxides were brought to the surface of the glass at fireing by spraying the surface with chloride which created the metallic sheen. Tiffany's artisans also specialized in combining and manipulating contrasting colors of glass during the process to create the striated, feather-like forms that decorate this vase. By pulling and stretching the material when it was still hot, the craftsman could create lines of glass that appear to be embedded within the glass fabric of the vessel.
