Mount Washington Glass Company
This vase was created between 1920 and 1925, and was manufactured by the Mount Washington Glass Company in New Bedford, Massachusetts. It was free blown by a skilled craftsman in the company’s glass furnaces. The craftsman painstakingly blew the vase’s form and shaped it carefully with tongs and other tools while it was in its molten state.
The distinctive glaze on the outside of this glass is one that is unique to the Mount Washington Glass Company. Its delicate pink to yellow shading was formed by applying uranium oxide onto the vase’s surface. After the vase was formed and annealed (or cured in an annealing oven), the craftsman sandblasted it to create the matte finish of its exterior. Frederick Shirley, the innovative glassmaker associated with Mount Washington, came up with this process hoping to double company sales by not only producing a colored piece of glassware but one with a distinctive texture and use of color.
