Richard Zoellner
American, 1908–2003
Best known as a printmaker, Richard Zoellner also created paintings and sculptures. Originally from Ohio, Zoellner lived in Alabama for most of his life, and taught at art at the University of Alabama from 1945–1978. He thought of himself as the only abstract artist in the South during the 1950s and 1960s.
In his prints, Zoellner used real life items as the starting point for his imagery. Focusing on line, color, texture, and form he transformed these once recognizable objects into abstractions. In "Arrangement," Zoellner takes the essence of machined metal parts and twists and turns them into an optical maze that plays with viewers' perceptions much like many of the artists of the Op Art movement.
