"Feeding Chickens" demonstrates Margaret Law’s ability to imbue a daily chore with a universal significance that transcends place and time. The painting is eminently joyful, conveying the rhythms of the figure’s world and her place within it through the undulations that link her form with the landscape. A brilliant, intense Southern light floods the scene, making every color glow. The woman’s body is monumental, her motion implied by rapidly executed brushstrokes, which define all the elements of the composition and provide a unifying force mirroring the color and light. The most visually compelling and abstract components of the composition are the chickens, their scurrying dance for food at the woman’s feet captured by a riot of loosely applied strokes of paint.
