Small settlements were established and sustained in the mountainous environments of the West, more slowly transformed by exposure to the outside world because of the delays in development of communication and transportation. The presence of the electrical supply poles signals that although the town looks as if it could have been built in the earliest days of settlement, it now boasts electrical transmission lines.
