Will Henry Stevens
American, 1881–1949
The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts’ work "Abstracted Landscape" by Will Henry Stevens is representative of the artist's non-objective style. Stevens worked the composition using two different media: oil and pastel. This allowed him to fully develop the color, form, and atmosphere of the work. Carefully choosing a variety of earth tones in blues, browns, and greens, Stevens renders the environmental elements through a combination of shape, pattern and line. Stevens structured the composition with geometric forms, outlined in and softened by pastel; the forms are reinforced with the gestural application of color. The simple, nature-derived forms and colors give a sense of universality to the composition. He evokes the cold clear atmosphere at high altitude. Overall, Stevens depicts a composition inspired by his personal experience with this given environment; one can readily imagine a mountainscape of the Appalachian range in North Carolina where he spent many summers.
