The ornate façade of Grace Church is depicted from an angle so that the viewer can fully appreciate the scale of its soaring spire. Designed by architect James Renwick in 1843, this Gothic Revival-style church was consecrated in 1846. Unlike the compositions in some of her other etchings of New York, Goldthwaite isolates the church from the skyline, showing few of the taller buildings that surround it. Instead, she focuses on the specific details of the building’s profile.
