During the United States’ involvement in World War I, Fifth Avenue was the scene of many of the morale-boosting, War Bond-supporting parades for American troops. The citizens of New York were so committed to the war effort that they renamed all of Fifth Avenue the Avenue of the Allies. The city also decorated one of the most heavily traveled areas, between Forty-Second Street and Fifty-Ninth Street, with the flags of each of the twenty Allied Nations who had troops involved in battle. This scene inspired many artists, including American Impressionist artist Child Hassam, who painted it multiple times.
