Watercolor was not a primary medium for Freer, who had trained at the Munich Academy as a painter in oils. During his professional career, however, he did execute illustrations, and his landscape watercolors indicate that he also used watercolor in painting from nature. This study of a model, most likely his wife Margaret, is reminiscent of other works from the 1890s when transportation made trips to wilderness areas more accessible for city dwellers.
