In making the painted wall reliefs for which he is known, Frank Stella made a practice of etching sheets of magnesium, which were then cut apart, painted and configured. The remnants of these sheets were at certain points experimentally inked and printed at Tyler Graphics, one of the great printmaking ateliers where Stella collaborated with master printers. The challenge of making these monumental prints called for an arsenal of printing wizardry, from the creation of huge sheets of dyed, handmade paper, to the incorporation of wood blocks, etching and engraving printed as both intaglio and relief process.
Stella was fascinated with the thrill of speed, along with its attendant danger, and the theme of the racetrack is a recurring one in his art. The titles of the paintings and prints in the "Circuits" series are taken from automobile race courses around the world and "Talladega Three II" specifically from the stock car racetrack, Talladega Superspeedway, in east Alabama. The designation "three" in the title "Talladega Three II" refers to the scale of the enlargement from the image of the original painting; the number II is the sequence of the variation in the series of the prints.
