La Tauromaquia was created between between 1814 and 1816, illustrating the origins, history and practices of bullfighting. The complete series was composed of forty plates, of which this is Plate 11. The works of the Tauromaquia are some of Goya's most accomplished, as he downplayed the use of the etched line, and emphasized the effects created by aquatint in producing light, shadow and atmosphere.
