A large portion of First Period Worcester porcelains were decorated before glazing with cobalt blue, which was the only color that survived the high temperatures of the glazing kiln. Underglaze blue was used in both hand-painted decoration as well as transfer printed decoration. The Blue and White product of Worcester was modeled on, and marketed, in direct competition to Blue and White Chinese Export porcelains. Blue and White was an affordable form of porcelain, and was widely available from both East Asian and European factories. Usually, as in this scallop shell-shaped dish, the decoration of European products is reminiscent of that found on Chinese ware—the floral motif of chrysanthemum seen in the center of this dish, was particularly popular.
