Worcester Porcelain Factory
English, born established 1751
Sweetmeats were candied or crystallized fruits, and they were used along with pickles to disguise the taste of stale food in the days before refrigeration. They were also served after meals, and sometimes later during the evening's entertainment.
This stand is molded in the form of three scallop-shaped shells which are supported by a rockwork base encrusted with shells, coral, and seaweed. Some of the shells and coral supporting the three scallop-shaped dishes were molded from actual shells while others are totally imaginary.
