Worcester Porcelain Factory
English, born established 1751
A successful yellow ground was difficult to achieve in the eighteenth century, making such pieces rare. The yellow scale ground effect was not as popular with Worcester customers as other colors and thus was produced only from about 1765 to 1770. Today, however, it is highly prized. The vase- and mirror-shaped reserve panels on this set contain insects and plumed, "disheveled" birds perched on twiglike trees that seem unable to hold their weight. An insect is also painted on the bottom of the cup's interior.
