Although it was probably the owner's decision whether a basket should be used as a container or purely ornamental, it is clear from the patterns used that most were made as accompaniments to dessert services. This form was characterized as a chestnut basket. Baskets such as these were made only from about 1768 to 1772. Its pierced form with twig handles and molded, encrusted flowers derives from examples from the Meissen German manufactory.
