Rick Beck
American
(Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, 1960 - )

Rick Beck enthusiastically joined the American Studio Glass Movement soon after it began in 1978. Along with training from Pilchuck Glass School and the Penland School of Craft, he has a B.A. from Hastings College and an M.F.A. from Southern Illinois University. He has worked as a glass artist since the late 1970s. He and his wife Valerie opened their own studio in Spruce Pine, North Carolina in 1991. He has taught and lived at many glass institutions. During this time, he also created several series of objects. He has been awarded a fellowship from the North Carolina Arts Council and another from the Southern Arts Federation to help him continue to pursue his creation of Studio Glass. Beck says that his work focuses on the “the interplay of the visual (visceral) versus the verbal (descriptive/technical). . .the work should challenge the mind.”
