Richard Jolley
American
(Wichita, Kansas, 1952 - )

Richard Jolley was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1952 and grew up in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. He studied with Michael Taylor first at Tusculum College and then at Vanderbilt University’s George Peabody College. Later he studied at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina where he continues to teach on occasion. Since 1975, the artist has maintained a studio near Knoxville, where he works with his wife, Tommie Rush, and several assistants. Throughout the three decades of Richard Jolley’s career he has maintained a constant focus on the human figure, its timeless beauty, and its expressive potential. He has used the artist’s formal vocabulary of line, light, color, texture, and form to create bright, warm, and often humorous sculptures in glass. In addition, he has produced related works in mixed media that illustrate the scope and breadth of his artistic personae and its primal, classical, and humanistic influences.
