Royal stools that feature regal iconography such as images of leopards and pythons have been discussed by anthropologists and art historians at much greater length than stools of common men and women like this one from the Grassfields of Cameroon. This short, square stool with its round seat has no royal iconography, but it does feature geometric patterns cut in low relief on two sides. The hollow, splayed form is pierced with a tall rectangle on all four sides, and the base is colored dark green. The reddish-brown circular seat has a concave top and a convex, pointed edge. The seat has been burnished from use.
