Sam Francis
American, 1923–1994
From the Carter Presidential Portfolio
To Sam Francis, the process of creating prints was as equally important as painting. The matrix form is apparent in many of his works of art and is manifest in the shape of a diamond in Untitled, 1981. He made this print as part of the Presidential Portfolio for the Democratic National Committee, a fundraising tool for presidential nominee Jimmy Carter. Here, Francis combined his signature drops and splatters in an abstract composition to imply movement and energy. Inherent in the work are random marks, which Francis embraced. In fact, he never thought of anything unplanned as a mistake; instead, he considered them interesting “surprises in the printmaking process.” J. Jankauskas
