Sam Francis’ paintings often were the inspiration for his prints. For example, the rectangle seen in Untitled, 1975, is a common motif in his works, first visible in his monochromatic paintings of 1951–1952. He revisited the idea in his matrix paintings beginning in 1975, the time that he made this print. Untitled, 1975, is sometimes known as "Upright Earth," after the orientation of the rectangle and the fact that the shape also refers to the plant (Earth) in Buddhist symbolism. Reinforcing this idea of the planet and earthen material, Francis’ image appears to emulate the dust of dry ground through his tones and the layers of ink that allude to the texture of dirt.
