The New York School of painters and poets arose simultaneously and they interacted with one another on the art scene. Grace Hartigan befriended many of the writers and, in 1952, began an artistic association with several of them including Frank O’Hara (American, 1926–1966). In addition, she and the poet James Schuyler (American, 1923– 1991) collaborated first under the auspices of the magazine, "Folder", and later in 1960 with a book for Tiber Press entitled "Salute".

"Salute" is a book of poetry by Schuyler which features an untitled suite of prints by Hartigan which includes "On a Tar Roof". The individual works in this series were not titled until 1991 when the artist signed an edition of unbound prints. In retrospect, Hartigan chose her titles from the last lines of Schuyler's poems that inspired the images.
