Karel Appel co-founded CoBrA, a group of Euroupean artists who organized in Paris from 1948-51 to encourage experimental approaches to art. During this association with CoBrA (an acronym derived form the native cities if the group's founders Copenhagen, Brussels, and Amsterdam), Appel achieved a simplicity and impulsiveness in his work that continued to develop long after the group disbanded. Appel has employed the same gestural style and intense expressionism in many different media including painting, sculpture, drawing, and printmaking. In this print a figurative frm emerges from patches of color that are layered in a harsh rythm. Appel is unrestrained in his application of primary color, allowing it to practically govern the subject.
