Kate Cleghorn’s photographs picture evidence of the historic and pre-historic past that is still with us today. Windsor, a magnificent plantation home built 1859-61 near the southern terminus of the Trace was brand new when Grant’s army marched past it in May of 1862 on their way to capture Vicksburg, the Gibraltar of the Confederacy. In the 1890s, when Mississippi planters were beginning to recover from the devastation of the war and Reconstruction, an accidental fire reduced the mansion to ashes. Only the brick columns and cast iron capitals were left to suggest the grand scale and opulence of the antebellum past.
