While R.B. Kitaj was primarily a figurative artist the print series, "In Our Time: Covers for a Small Library after the Life for the Most Part (1969–1970)" has now come to be thought of a link from art of the 1960s to the era of Conceptual Art in the 1970s.

"Edward Hopper" belongs to this important series comprised of fifty images of single book covers from Kitaj's personal library. While the book's contents may be unknown to the viewer, the artist hopes the title alone conjures up other associations the viewer. In regard to this series, Kitaj stated, “Books feed into the pictures I make with an untutored passion. Vast libraries have crowded around my painting easel all my life and the spectres in books have haunted me, some would say ruined me, and now and again they even breathe life into some of my dubious art.“
