Thomas Moran
American, born England, 1837–1926
Thomas Moran made a practice of traveling and collecting source materials (drawings, watercolors and oil sketches) that he brought back to his studio to create paintings that he exhibited, and which cemented his reputation as one of the outstanding landscape painters of the nineteenth century.
The Half Dome is a granite formation located at the eastern end of the Yosemite Valley. Moran made a watercolor of this composition in 1873 after a visit to Yosemite in the fall of 1872. The vantage point in this etching, Moran Point, was named for him. The composition for this etching is derived from the watercolor "Half Dome, Yosemite", which is now in the collection of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City.
