Joan Mulder
American, born the Netherlands
(Devanter, Netherlands, 1913 - 1986, Selma, Alabama)

Mulder was born in Devanter, Netherlands and came to the United States in the 1930s to study biology at Trinity College in Washington, D.C. There she met Dr. Isabel Dumont and together they formed a lifelong partnership dedicated to missionary service. In 1944, they set up a health clinic for the African-American population in Selma. Mulder also founded the Canterbury Art Guild in Selma, 1947-53, and organized a chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous to serve the African-American community in 1964. Several national organizations and Pope John Paul XXIII recognized Mulder and Dumont with awards.
