Prendergast created "Fall Foliage" in the later part of his artistic career. The mix of short and long brushstrokes, and blending of green, blue, yellow, red, and orange pigment, demonstrate the artist’s mastery of movement and color. The overt brushstrokes and bold use of color, as well as the landscape motif, also reflect the influence of Cézanne. In addition, "Fall Foliage" illustrates Prendergast’s common technique of representing space, often referred to as banding, where horizontal sections divide the composition. Three bands appear in this painting to indicate spatial recession: the bottom green field in the foreground, the middle with the cluster of houses and autumnal colored trees, and the sky at the top.
